Team for Burnley
Can't remember the last time we had a game on a Saturday at 3pm - the good old days.

I would expect another fairly attritional, low-scoring game against Burnley, but that could change if somebody scores early. There is probably no point judging either the team as a whole or any individuals for a rather lackluster performance at Stockport - the conditions were truly atrocious.

Presumably Fredericks, Balbuena and Diop will still be isolating for this one, and we only have one striker despite what that tedious tit Faux Bare might think. All of which makes it fairly easy to pick the side. Probably the only area for serious debate is which two to play out of Fornals, Lanzini and Benrahma. Personally, I would like to see Fornals in the No.10 role and Benrahma wide left. Having said that, I'm noticing more and more that these players are becoming very good at interchanging positions and covering for each other. Not that it particularly seems to help when we're trying to penetrate packed defenses, which is the thing we most need to work on.

Not sure why anyone would think lanzini and yarmalenko would be first choices, it could be a slog

I really hate it when we play Burnley.

70 mins to go they bring on Woods to score a header every bloody time

Just watched them against Manc Utd and they are so hard to break down. Exactly the sort of team we struggle against and probably the best at what they do.

When they did concede it was to a deflected shot from Pogba just outside the penalty area.

Antonio will never bully Mee and Tarkowski and they put everything on the line to block shots, make last ditch clearances.

Then they have physical, 100% committed lumps like Wood and Barnes who will try all the tricks in the book to get free kicks and on the end of things.

Wish we had some other attacking and creative options. With us at home it could once again be a game where we have a lot of possession but they get the chances on the break and Wood bags a winner as usual :-(

The ultimate test for the spirit of the team and Moyes's suggestion that we are no longer flaky and a soft touch.

As long as he doesnt play Noble i dont mind but as previously saud they are bloody hard to break down, we must surely get a penalty sometime this season so i hope its this saturday

I'm divided between Steve's team and Exiles
But having Lanzini in there instead of Benrhama edges it for me. Benrhama needs to get his shots on target, Lanzini usaully is more accurate.Having the likes of Antonio and Soucek to feed of any saves from Pope will be crucial. We need more shots on target. Benrhama will be needed as both sides tire towards the end and could replace Antonio at some point.
The Stockport game was a good rehearshall for Burnley.

For me, Lanzini is too lightweight up against this lot. I know Benrahma is a bit of a lightweight too but he has more tricks up his sleeve.

Moyes to play with 7 defensive players for this one.

I hate this lot for all the reasons daveyg said. We never seem to get the better of them or make it easy against teams like this. Hope we are ready for it.

Re: Team for Burnley
As much as I love Pablo, I don’t think that this is the sort of game that suits him. If he was a better finisher, sure, but he’s a pretty terrible finisher and we can’t afford to waste too many chances.

Burnley are a poor team. Amazingly they’ve managed to get four wins and four draws, having scored only nine (NINE) goals all season. Touch wood, they’re going to struggle to score against a Godbonna and Dawson-led defense.

As with against Stockport, we should have a setup that’s all attack, to tempt them out of their defensive wall and obviously to increase the chance of getting a goal ourselves. Every attack of theirs is an opportunity for us to counterattack before their defence is set.

That’s a lot of rambling just to say that I’d pick Lanzini at no10 instead of Pablo. I’d go with Steve’s lineup.

Re: Team for Burnley
By the way, HAMMERAMA has a good point on another thread.

“Our style and success this season have come from set plays. To get these chances we need lots of free kicks and corners. To create these moments the Coufals etc have to overlap and get the opposition defenders defending facicing their goal.”

Let’s be honest, wit Antonio unlikely to be leading swashbuckling counterattacks, if we get a goal against Burnley, it’ll probably be from a corner.

Hear me out here, but what if we played Bowen and Benrahma on their right side so they can put in a few more crosses?

It is like Exile says a choice from Fornals, Lanzini or Benrahma. For me Benrahma is better around the box and Lanzini better in midfield to get the ball to the box. I think we will need help from Lanzini to get to the box.

I guess the other option is a back 5 with Johnson, but I think for this we’re better with Fornals doing that role if needed.
